Chapel Hill of London 228146 1997 080782349X / 9780807823491 Hardcover Near Fine Condition Near Fine Gardening enthusiasts and those who love to read about gardening will be delighted by this new collection of Elizabeth Lawrence's work. A gifted landscape architect and writer, Lawrence (1904-85) chronicled her experiences with plants in a voice treasured for its distinctive blend of horticultural expertise and stylistic elegance. Through her six books, all still in print, Lawrence continues to inspire an ever-widening circle of dedicated readers everywhere. Between 1932 and 1978, Lawrence wrote more than fifty articles for gardening magazines, newsletters, and plant society bulletins. Uncovered in a seven-year search and collected here for the first time, these writings offer further testament to her talent for conveying practical details in an engaging, literate manner. Treating such subjects as trees and shrubs, bulbs, perennials, native plants, even fellow gardeners, this collection will be welcomed by the novice and knowledgeable gardener alike. 281 pages. The Madwoman's Underclothes - Essays & Occassional Writings 1968-1985, Germaine Greer
5 Germaine Greer The Madwoman's Underclothes - Essays & Occassional Writings 1968-1985
Picador 226788 Great Britain 1986 0330301497 / 9780330301497 Softcover Good Condition Always strong and fearless, Germaine Greer strikes right at the heart of the matter-be it John F. Kennedy and vaginal deodorants, rape and artificial insemination, cosmetic surgery, the death of Jimi Hendrix, or the famine in Ethiopia. This collection represents a mosaic of essays, long and short, some of which are appearing for the first time in print and all of which chafe the conventional and are bristling with argument. From the youthful liveliness of her sixties pieces, which "got up everybody's nose," to the depth and complexity of her later work, The Madwoman's Underclothes is a reflection both of an era and of the changing ideas and styles of Germaine Greer: "The essays on Brazil, Cuba, and Ethiopia represent my coming of age. Something like a coherent system of values is beginning to emerge after my years of wandering, although I have certainly not arrived at a set of articles of faith, and never will, I hope." Greer's opinions on social, political, and sexual trends and mores are tendered in her unique fashion-outspoken, with rapier wit and no tolerance for narrow-mindedness. But as explosive, angry, and often funny as these essays are, they also reveal tenderness and sadness and that emotion that underlies all of Greer's work-passionate commitment. 305 pages. John Mortimer - The Secret Lives of Rumpole's Creator, Graham Lord
6 Graham Lord John Mortimer - The Secret Lives of Rumpole's Creator
St. Martin's Press 158719 New York 2006 First US Edition 0312330820 / 9780312330828 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good 326 pp.In Britain every generation produces a national treasure, a lovable figure so English that he could not possibly be of any other nationality, and Sir John Mortimer is just such a figure.Mortimer has delighted millions all over the world with seven television series about the gloriously larger-than-life fictional barrister Horace Rumpole --- Rumpole of the Bailey --- as well as novels, autobiographies, stage plays, film scripts, short stories, television and radio plays, newspaper articles, and even an opera and a ballet. Laurence Olivier, John Gielgud, and Alec Guinness appeared in his plays, and among his greatest theatrical triumphs is his stage and television play A Voyage Round My Father. He won a British Book Awards trophy for Lifetime Achievement in 2005.Mortimer actually practiced as a barrister for thirty-six years, defending husbands, wives, pornographers, and murderers in court and starring as the real-life ?Devil?s Advocate? in several legendary obscenity and blasphemy cases in the 1970s, quickly becoming a liberal hero.Yet despite huge success, fame, and knighthood there lurks beneath that genial ?champagne socialist? mask an unusually complex man who has been plagued by depression, doubt, insecurity, and an irresistible urge to commit adultery.Biographer Graham Lord, whose discovery that Mortimer had a secret son by the British actress Wendy Craig forced Sir John to admit it publicly in 2004, has interviewed scores of Mortmer?s family, friends, mistresses, and enemies to write a frank and vital biography that reveals the startling reality behind the beloved public figure Quantity Available: 1. A Grand Tour - Letters and Journeys 1794-96 [The Century Lives & Letters], J. S. B. Morritt of Rokeby
8 J. S. B. Morritt of Rokeby A Grand Tour - Letters and Journeys 1794-96 [The Century Lives & Letters]
Century Publishing 229320 London 1985 0712609938 / 9780712609937 Softcover Very Good Condition In 1794, after the recent inheritance of his father's fortune, the twenty-two-year-old John Bacon Sawrey Morritt departed his native Yorkshire on a Grand Tour during which he travelled through Greece, Austria, Hungary, Asia Minor and Italy. He returned in 1796, whereupon he settled down to lead the life of the influential country squire of Rokeby Hall - situated between Richmond and Barnard Castle, and described by his friend Sir Walter Scott as 'one of the most enviable places I have ever seen'. Perhaps its attractions explain the fact that Morritt never again repeated the grand scale of the venture recorded and celebrated in this book, though he lived until 1843. A Grand Tour was not published until 1914: it forms an edited collection of Morritt's letters, written while en route, to his mother, sister and aunt. At once instructive, anecdotal and entertaining - whether dwelling on the balls and cafés of Vienna, or the pilfering of classical remains in Athens ('some we steal, some we buy') - this correspondence allows us to journey in the company of 'a man made on the purpose to travel with', in the words of a contemporary who had done just that. This edition of A Grand Tour includes and introduction by Peter J. Hogarth, who is a lecturer at York University. In addition to his many articles and publications, Dr. Hogarth is also the author of a book on dragons. He is himself well-traveled in the footsteps of J. B. S. Morritt. 319 pages.
