Chaucer - Canterbury Tales, A.C. Cawley [Editor]
1 A.C. Cawley [Editor] Chaucer - Canterbury Tales
Dent 237063 London 1984 Reprint 0460113070 / 9780460113076 Softcover Good Condition No Dust Jacket Inspired by Boccaccio's "Decameron", and framed as a storytelling competition between a group of pilgrims, Geoffrey Chaucer's "The Canterbury Tales" is one of the greatest works of English literature, translated from the Middle English with an introduction by Nevill Coghill in "Penguin Classics". In "The Canterbury Tales" Chaucer created one of the great touchstones of English literature, a masterly collection of chivalric romances, moral allegories and low farce. A story-telling competition between a group of pilgrims from all walks of life is the occasion for a series of tales that range from the Knight's account of courtly love and the ebullient Wife of Bath's Arthurian legend, to the ribald anecdotes of the Miller and the Cook. Rich and diverse, "The Canterbury Tales" offers us an unrivalled glimpse into the life and mind of Medieval England. Nevill Coghill's masterly and vivid English verse translation is rendered with consummate skill to retain all the vigour and poetry of Chaucer's fourteenth-century Middle English. Geoffrey Chaucer (c.1343-1400) was an English author, poet, philosopher, courtier and diplomat, best known as the author of "The Canterbury Tales". Chaucer is credited as being the first author to demonstrate the artistic legitimacy of the vernacular English language. The first poet to have been buried in the Poet's Corner of Westminster Abbey, his other works include "The House of Fame", "Troilus and Criseyde" and "The Book of the Duchess". If you enjoyed "The Canterbury Tales", you might like Boccaccio's "Decameron" 612 pages. Pages browned. Previous owners name on front endpaper. Cover edges rubbed. Quantity Available: 1. Prometheus and Other Plays: Prometheus Bound; The Suppliants; Seven Against Thebes and The Persians, Aeschylus [Phillip Vellacott - Translated with an introduction]
2 Aeschylus [Phillip Vellacott - Translated with an introduction] Prometheus and Other Plays: Prometheus Bound; The Suppliants; Seven Against Thebes and The Persians
Penguin Classics 240239 London, England. 1966 Reprint Softcover Good Condition (ex-library) No Dust Jacket The first of the great Greek Tragedians, Aeschylus wrote a large number of plays, of which seven survive. Of the four included in this volume, The Persians is unique in Greek tragedy in having as its subject matter a recent historical event, the defeat of the Persians at the famous battle of Salamis. The other three, Prometheus, The Suppliants and Seven Against Thebes, were all written as parts of trilogies and take their themes from Greek legend, but in each Aeschylus' interpretation reflects the new morality of classical Athens. Thus, in Seven Against Thebes the fate of the two main figures, Eteocles and Polyneices, is not entirely controlled by the gods, for Eteocles is free to choose whether or not he should fight his brother. And in Prometheus and The Suppliants Aeschylus shows that although the struggle of reason against violence can never be an easy one, it is reason that is the proper principle of civilized life. 160 pages. The Last Chronicle of Barset, Anthony Trollope
7 Anthony Trollope The Last Chronicle of Barset
Wordsworth Classics 242615 1994 1853262315 / 9781853262319 Softcover Very Good Condition The central drama of the book is that of Mr.Crawley, the curate of Hogglestock who, falsely accused of theft, suffers bitterly with his family. This deceptively simple plot, though, is given a twist, and the character of Mr. Crawley is more ambigious than would at first appear. It is he himself who seems to bring about the most of his suffering, and the portrait of his man--gloomy brooding, and proud, moving relentlessly from one humiliation to another--achieves tragic dimensions. 712 pages. Pygmalion - A Romance In Five Acts, Bernard Shaw
11 Bernard Shaw Pygmalion - A Romance In Five Acts
Penguin Classics 226959 Great Britain 2003 Reprint 0141439505 / 9780141439501 Softcover Very Good Condition Definitive text under the editorial supervision of Dan H. Laurence. Introduction by Nicholas Grene. George Bernard Shaw's witty comedy of manners, Pygmalion includes an introduction by Nicholas Grene in Penguin Classics. Pygmalion both delighted and scandalized its first audiences in 1914. A brilliantly witty reworking of the classical tale of the sculptor Pygmalion, who falls in love with his perfect female statue, it is also a barbed attack on the British class system and a statement of Shaw's feminist views. In Shaw's hands, the phoneticist Henry Higgins is the Pygmalion figure who believes he can transform Eliza Doolittle, a cockney flower girl, into a duchess at ease in polite society. The one thing he overlooks is that his 'creation' has a mind of her own. Adapted into the Oscar-winning musical film My Fair Lady starring Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison in 1964, Pygmalion This is the definitive text produced under the editorial supervision of Dan H. Laurence, with an illuminating introduction by Nicholas Grene, discussing the language and politics of the play. Also included in this volume is Shaw's preface, as well as his 'sequel' written for the first publication in 1916, to rebut public demand for a more conventially romantic ending. 122 pages. After The Fireworks - A Life Of David Ballantyne, Bryan Reid
13 Bryan Reid After The Fireworks - A Life Of David Ballantyne
Auckland University Press 225152 New Zealand 2004 First Edition 1869403274 / 9781869403270 Trade Paperback Very Good Condition No Dust Jacket "After the Fireworks" is the biography of a New Zealand journalist and novelist who believed he 'never really made it' and whose fiction has been too quickly forgotten (he died in 1986). He stands with Ronald Hugh Morrieson as one of the first local novelists to escape from the narrow limits of critical realism and provincial inadequacy. This is a very readable account of his life by a friend who knew him well and it is also a picture of the worlds of journalism and literary endeavour in the postwar period. It shows his brilliant early start with "The Cunninghams", his friendship with Sargeson, the mystery of his interrupted career and the surprise of his sudden late flowering. This sensitive workmanlike book will help to reawaken wider interest in this important writer: his two novels "The Cunninghams" and "Sydney Bridge Upside Down" are already seen as classics and his two last novels are of considerable interest. 224 pages. Illustrated with black and white photographs. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 1-2 kilos. Category: Biography; Biography & Autobiography; ISBN: 1869403274. ISBN/EAN: 9781869403270. Hard Times for These Times, Charles Dickens
15 Charles Dickens Hard Times for These Times
Penguin English Library 239259 Great Britain 1974 Reprint 0140430423 / 9780140430424 Softcover Good Condition A damning indictment of Utlilitarianism and the dehumanising influence of the Industrial Revolution, Charles Dickens's Hard Times is edited with an introduction and notes by Kate Flint in Penguin Classics. In Hard Times, the Northern mill-town of Coketown is dominated by the figure of Mr Thomas Gradgrind, school headmaster and model of Utilitarian success. Feeding both his pupils and family with facts, he bans fancy and wonder from any young minds. As a consequence his obedient daughter Louisa marries the loveless businessman and 'bully of humanity' Mr Bounderby, and his son Tom rebels to become embroiled in gambling and robbery. And, as their fortunes cross with those of free-spirited circus girl Sissy Jupe and victimized weaver Stephen Blackpool, Gradgrind is eventually forced to recognize the value of the human heart in an age of materialism and machinery. This edition of Hard Times is based on the text of the first volume publication of 1854. Kate Flint's introduction sheds light on the frequently overlooked character interplay in Dickens's great critique of Victorian industrial society. Charles Dickens is one of the best-loved novelists in the English language, whose 200th anniversary was celebrated in 2012. His most famous books, including Oliver Twist, Great Expectations, A Tale of Two Cities, David Copperfield and The Pickwick Papers, have been adapted for stage and screen and read by millions. Text Classics 231357 Australia 2016 1925355705 / 9781925355703 Softcover Near Fine Condition No Dust Jacket 'The express flew towards Paris over the flooded March swamps. In a parlour-car, the melancholy dark young woman looked out persistently at the sand-dunes, cement-mills, pines, the war-cemetery with stone banners like folded umbrellas, the fields under water, the bristling ponds with deserted boats and the little naked trees which marked the horizon-searching roads.' It is 1934, and Elvira Western has left London and her dull marriage to Paul, a doctor, for Paris and her waiting lover, Oliver, a student radical. But drab hotels and interminable discussions of politics are not her idea of romance, and soon Elvira is wishing she could leave the city of 'many beauties-and furies', and return home...Christina Stead's second novel dramatises a love triangle against a backdrop of political upheaval. Its publication in 1936 prompted a writer for the New Yorker to call Stead the 'most extraordinary woman novelist' since Virginia Woolf. 348 pages. Quantity Available: 1.
