Prometheus and Other Plays: Prometheus Bound; The Suppliants; Seven Against Thebes and The Persians, Aeschylus [Phillip Vellacott - Translated with an introduction]
2 Aeschylus [Phillip Vellacott - Translated with an introduction] Prometheus and Other Plays: Prometheus Bound; The Suppliants; Seven Against Thebes and The Persians
Penguin Classics 240239 London, England. 1966 Reprint Softcover Good Condition (ex-library) No Dust Jacket The first of the great Greek Tragedians, Aeschylus wrote a large number of plays, of which seven survive. Of the four included in this volume, The Persians is unique in Greek tragedy in having as its subject matter a recent historical event, the defeat of the Persians at the famous battle of Salamis. The other three, Prometheus, The Suppliants and Seven Against Thebes, were all written as parts of trilogies and take their themes from Greek legend, but in each Aeschylus' interpretation reflects the new morality of classical Athens. Thus, in Seven Against Thebes the fate of the two main figures, Eteocles and Polyneices, is not entirely controlled by the gods, for Eteocles is free to choose whether or not he should fight his brother. And in Prometheus and The Suppliants Aeschylus shows that although the struggle of reason against violence can never be an easy one, it is reason that is the proper principle of civilized life. 160 pages. Somewhere: The Life of Jerome Robbins, Amanda Vaill
4 Amanda Vaill Somewhere: The Life of Jerome Robbins
Broadway Books 237015 New York 2006 0767904206 / 9780767904209 Softcover Very Good Condition From the author of the acclaimed Everybody Was So Young, the definitive and major biography of the great choreographer and Broadway legend Jerome Robbins To some, Jerome Robbins was a demanding perfectionist, a driven taskmaster, a theatrical visionary; to others, he was a loyal friend, a supportive mentor, a generous and entertaining companion and colleague. Born Jerome Rabinowitz in New York City in 1918, Jerome Robbins repudiated his Jewish roots along with his name only to reclaim them with his triumphant staging of Fiddler on the Roof. A self-proclaimed homosexual, he had romances or relationships with both men and women, some famous?like Montgomery Clift and Natalie Wood?some less so. A resolutely unpolitical man, he was forced to testify before Congress at the height of anti-Communist hysteria. A consummate entertainer, he could be paralyzed by shyness; nearly infallible professionally, he was conflicted, vulnerable, and torn by self-doubt. Guarded and adamantly private, he was an inveterate and painfully honest journal writer who confided his innermost thoughts and aspirations to a remarkable series of diaries and memoirs. With ballets like Dances at a Gathering, Afternoon of a Faun, and The Concert, he humanized neoclassical dance; with musicals like On the Town, Gypsy, and West Side Story, he changed the face of theater in America. In the pages of this definitive biography, Amanda Vaill takes full measure of the complicated, contradictory genius who was Jerome Robbins. She re-creates his childhood as the only son of Russian Jewish immigrants; his apprenticeship as a dancer and Broadway chorus gypsy; his explosion into prominence at the age of twenty-five with the ballet Fancy Free and its Broadway incarnation, On the Town; and his years of creative dominance in both theater and dance. She brings to life his colleagues and friends?from Leonard Bernstein and George Balanchine to Robert Wilson and Robert Graves?and his loves and lovers. And she tells the full story behind some of Robbins?s most difficult episodes, such as his testimony before the House Un-American Activities Committee and his firing from the film version of West Side Story. Drawing on thousands of pages of documents from Robbins?s personal and professional papers, to which she was granted unfettered access, as well as on other archives and hundreds of interviews, Somewhere is a riveting narrative of a life lived onstage, offstage, and backstage. It is also an accomplished work of criticism and social history that chronicles one man?s phenomenal career and places it squarely in the cultural ferment of a time when New York City was truly ?a helluva town.? 675 pages. Illustrated with black and white photographs. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 1-2 kilos. Category: Biography; United States; Dance; Dance. ISBN: 0767904206. ISBN/EAN: 9780767904209. Left for Dead: My Journey Home From Everest, Beck Weathers with Stephen G. Michaud
11 Beck Weathers with Stephen G. Michaud Left for Dead: My Journey Home From Everest
Sphere 234822 Australia 2015 0751561894 / 9780751561890 Softcover Very Good Condition Anyone who has read Jon Krakauer's famous account of the 1996 Everest disaster, INTO THIN AIR, will remember the story of Beck Weathers: the gregarious Texan climber who went snow-blind in the Death Zone below the summit and who spent a night out in the open during a blizzard that took the lives of a dozen colleagues and friends. Even as he staggered back into Camp 4 the next morning, Beck's condition was such that the other survivors assumed he would not make it back down the mountain. He was effectively left for dead, but drawing upon reserves of determination and courage he didn't know he had - as well as the extraordinary selflessness and bravery of a Nepalese helicopter pilot he'd never met - he finally made it to safety. Only then could a new battle begin: to rebuild his life with a family he'd taken for granted for too long. Heartstoppingly exciting and ultimately very moving, LEFT FOR DEAD is a terrific read. 284 pages. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilogram. Growing Pains, Billie Piper
18 Billie Piper Growing Pains
Hodder & Stoughton 229468 Great Britain 2006 0340938498 / 9780340938492 Trade Paperback Very Good Condition This is an astonishingly candid insight into the world of Billie Piper. Famous since the age of 15 - first as the face of Smash Hits, then as a pop singer with three No.1 hits in less than three years - Billie Piper has won over the critics and the British public for a second time by re-inventing herself as an actress in BBC productions of Much Ado About Nothing, The Canterbury Tales and, of course, Doctor Who. And that's just the professional Billie. In this book, for the first time, she talks honestly about her whirwind romance and marriage to Chris Evans, about her battles with anorexia and the dark side of teen fame. Moving, funny and honest, this is a page-turning read by one of the nation's favourite stars. 355 pages. Illustrated with colour photographs. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 1-2 kilos. The Spirit of London, Boris Johnson
19 Boris Johnson The Spirit of London
HarperPress 242889 Great Britain 2012 0007511175 / 9780007511174 Softcover Good Condition First published as Johnson's Life of London, now released with new material following Jubilee and Olympic celebrations in 2012. This updated history of London shows that the ingenuity, diversity, creativity and enterprise of the city are second to none... London's buildings may be famous, London's history may be lengthy and illustrious, but it is London's people who have given, and continue to give, the city its exuberant and exhilarating profile. London of the Olympic and Jubilee summer displayed Londoners on a world stage, but this is a city which has always lived on the energy and skills of its people, drawn to the capital from all over the country and the world. Boris Johnson shares with us his pleasure at London's vitality and unique character, and selects the people who in his view have contributed so much to the spirit of London - some very famous figures, some more obscure. He includes everyone from the Romans to one of the author's predecessors as mayor, Dick Whittington; from John Wilkes (a strong upholder of the freedom of the press) to J.W. Turner; from Chaucer to Gandhi, and through to modern times. 411 pages. Light tanning to pages. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilogram.
