14 Minutes - A Running Legend's Life And Death And Life, Alberto Salazar
1 Alberto Salazar 14 Minutes - A Running Legend's Life And Death And Life
Rodale 240508 USA 2012 1609619986 / 9781609619985 Trade Paperback Near Fine Condition No Dust Jacket In 2007, after collapsing on a practice field at the Nike campus, champion marathoner Alberto Salazar's heart stopped beating for 14 minutes. Over the crucial moments that followed, rescuers administered CPR to feed oxygen to his brain and EMTs shocked his heart eight times with defibrillator paddles. He was clinically dead. But miraculously, Salazar was back at the Nike campus coaching his runners just nine days later. Salazar had faced death before, but he survived that and numerous other harrowing episodes thanks to his raw physical talent, maniacal training habits, and sheer will, as well as--he strongly believes--divine grace. In 14 Minutes, Salazar chronicles in spellbinding detail how a shy, skinny Cuban-American kid from the suburbs of Boston was transformed into the greatest marathon runner of his era. For the first time, he reveals his tempestuous relationship with his father, a former ally of Fidel Castro; his early running life in high school with the Greater Boston Track Club; his unhealthy obsession to train through pain; the dramatic wins in New York, Boston, and South Africa; and how surviving 14 minutes of death taught him to live again. 260 pages. Frogs, David Badgwer
6 David Badgwer Frogs
Barnes & Noble Books 235378 New York 1997 0760706050 / 9780760706053 Hardcover Very Good Condition Very Good John Netherton [Photographs] Frogs and toads fascinate us for many reasons. Frogs sport a dazzling array of colors and markings--some for camouflage, others to warn away predators. Adults also vary a good deal in size, from a tiny Brazilian frog (under one-half inch) to the West African goliath frog (almost sixteen inches), and they exhibit similar diversity in body shape, from the slender tree frogs and narrow-waisted "true frogs" to the stout-bodied roads and buxom burrowing frogs. "Frogs" showcases over fifty of the world's most fascinating frogs. While some of the frogs and toads included in this book will be recognized by readers, others will certainly be new. This is understandable, since there are over 3,950 species worldwide. Frog families such as tree frogs, toads, poison frogs, horned frogs, and bullfrogs, are shown with photographs to distinguish the different species. In "Frogs," John Netherton's brilliant photos are paired with David Badger's easy-to-read, non-technical text, pointing out the characteristics that make the frogs so unique and interesting. This four-color reference book gives great detail about the physical characteristics of frogs, and their behavior. From their skin, to their senses of hearing, sight, and taste, to their unique style of communication--croaking, singing, and chirping, all of the traits that make frogs special are described in detail. Their reproductive habits and springing jumps are shown with visual references. 145 pages. Illustrator: John Netherton [Photographs]. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 1-2 kilos. Conversatins with my Gardener, Henri Cueco
11 Henri Cueco Conversatins with my Gardener
Granta Books 236374 London 2006 1862078408 / 9781862078406 Softcover Good Condition Tales of life, death and lettuce in a French garden. Two men, both advancing in years, converse deep in the French countryside. One is an artist, the other his gardener. On finishing his work, the gardener enters the studio and looks over the artist's shoulder. As the artist draws, the gardener talks: about his youth, his family, his travels, his health, and, of course, the pleasures of gardening. Sometimes the artist responds, sometimes he just listens; but, all the while the bond between these two very different men is deepening. Their growing friendship produces many moments of dry humour: when the gardener visits the artist in Paris, he brings an anvil along in his luggage; the pair go to the forest on a mission to steal a twenty- foot fir tree; they marvel at the curious habits of local characters, and ponder whether a modern-day Jesus would take a job on the railway. There are moments of profundity, too, when the two friends reflect on their own mortality, and the equally taxing question of whether a lettuce can be as beautiful as a paintin First few pages have a stain to side edge. 202 pages. This is what a young boy discovers, in no uncertain terms, when interviewing his cat for a class assignment. As well as eating ('a bit of fish might be delish') and sleeping ('Meow. And how.'), the 'odd need to prance' is revealed as one of kitty's most enjoyable hobbies - Cue much tail-whisking and silent dancing. And what of plain old humans? Well, this straight-talking cat admires their ability to balance nicely on two feet, but can't ignore the fact that 'they look peculiar with no fur'. Feeding The Crisis, Rachel Garst & Tom Barry
19 Rachel Garst & Tom Barry Feeding The Crisis
University of Nebraska 238751 USA 1990 0803260954 / 9780803260955 Trade Paperback Very Good Condition Since 1980 the United States has increased tenfold its shipments of food to Central America. Supposedly, tis humanitarian aid has alleviated social turmoil and economic underdevelopment in Central America. But has it really been in the best interests of the people it was intended to assist? After nearly two years of research that took them to Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Costa Rica, Rachel Garst and Tom Barry have concluded that U. S. food shipments and assistance in agricultural development are, in fact, feeding the crisis in Central American, hurting rather than helping. The findings of Garst and Barry are disturbing. They discovered that increased U. S. food aid to Central America is being used to achieve short-term foreign-policy objectives that undercut long-term U. S. interests. The authors reveal that, instead of being allocated on the basis of need, U. S. food aid is being used to support military programs; and that it is distorting Central American economies by reducing production of and prices for local crops, by benefitting agribusiness at the expense of small farmers, and by encouraging new consumption habits that neither family incomes nor national treasuries can sustain. For recipient governments, food aid has become a permanent solution instead of an emergency measure. Garst and Barry charge that the Agency for International Development and U. S. Department of Agriculture are partly to blame for this state of affairs. They make detailed recommendations for changes in the way food aid is administered, changes that are urgently needed to stem the negative social, economic, and political effects of programs that until now have largely been shielded from scrutiny. 275 pages.
