Husbands, Adele Parks
1 Adele Parks Husbands
Penguin Books 238869 Great Britain 2005 0141015454 / 9780141015453 Softcover Good Condition ella secretly married her childhood sweetheart, Stevie, over a decade ago; they were at university, two big kids playing at being grownups. When it all unravelled and reality hit, Bella simply got up and left. And the secret remained a secret.Years later, Bella meets Philip and, despite her vow never to marry again, she can't resist him. He is a catch. Funny, charming, interesting and kind. Only hitch is, she's still (technically, anyway) married to Stevie. Bella, typically, just ignores the problem. And the moment to tell Philip never quite seems to arrive. So Bella plans never to reveal her secret - after all, it's just a silly piece of paper, lodged at a registrar's office in Aberdeen, isn't it? She hasn't seen Stevie for years - probably never will again. Except that Bella's best friend Laura has fallen in love, and when she introduces her new man to the gang it is none other than Stevie. Could things get any more complicated? Only if Bella and Stevie fall in love with each other again.. 473 pages. Light tanning to pages. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilogram. The Death of Literature, Alvin Kernan
3 Alvin Kernan The Death of Literature
Yale University Press 227800 USA 1990 0300052383 / 9780300052381 Softcover Very Good Condition Literature has passed through a crisis of confidence in recent decades-a radical questioning of its traditional values and its importance to humanity. In this witty and eloquent book, a distinguished professor of humanities looks at some of the agents that have contributed to literature's demise and ponders whether its vitality can be restored in the changing circumstances of late twentieth-century culture. Other critics, such as E. D. Hirsch and Allan Bloom, have also explored the growing cultural illiteracy of modern society. Alvin Kernan probes deeper, relating the death of literature to potent forces in our postindustrial world-most obviously, the technological revolution that is rapidly transforming a print to an electronic culture, replacing the authority of the written word with the authority of television, film, and computer screens. The turn taken by literary criticism itself, in deconstructing traditional literature and declaring it void of meaning in itself, and in focusing on what are described as its ideological biases against women and nonwhites, has speeded the disintegration. Recent legal debates about copyright, plagiarism, and political patronage of the arts have exposed the greed and self-interest at work under the old romantic images of the imaginative creative artist and the work of art as a perfect, unchanging icon. Kernan describes a number of the crossroads where literature and society have met and literature has failed to stand up. He discusses the high comedy of the obscenity trial in England against Lady Chatterley's Lover, in which the British literary establishment vainly tried to define literature. He takes alarmed looks at such agents of literary disintegration as schools where children who watch television eight hours a day can't read, decisions about who chooses and defines the words included in dictionaries, faculty fights about the establishment of new departments and categories of study, and courtrooms where criminals try to profit from bestselling books about their crimes. According to Kernan, traditional literature is ceasing to be legitimate or useful in these changed social surroundings. What is needed, he says, if it is any longer possible in electronic culture, is a conception of literature that fits in some positive way with the new ethos of post-industrialism, plausibly claiming a place of importance both to individual lives and to society as a whole for the best kind of writing. 230 pages. Voyager / HarperCollins 225769 London 2004 0007153864 / 9780007153862 Trade Paperback Very Good Condition No Dust Jacket The first book in a brand new trilogy from the author of Prospero's Children. Bartlemy Goodman is approximately 1500 years old. An albino of Greek parentage he was born in Byzantium amidst the decline of the Roman Empire and now resides at Thornyhill house, England, with his dog, Hoover. Bartlemy is one of the Gifted. But long experience has taught him the perils of the power of the witch-kind and so throughout the ages has channelled his considerable talents into cooking, his culinary prowess becoming the stuff of legend: he worked for the Borgias, was among the first to discover chocolate and even taught the likes of Escoffier. On a warm evening in 1991 a young homeless woman holding a baby turns up on Bartlemy's doorstep and he senses destiny at work. The woman's name is Annie Ward and her son, Nathan, is an exceptional child as Annie cannot account for his conception. Her husband Daniel died in a car accident so Nathan cannot be his. Soon Bartlemy comes to believe that the boy was created beyond the Gate of Death by a superior being for a special purpose, one that may threaten all of witch-kind and that it is his job to protect him. Whilst Nathan grows and Bartlemy continues to watch over the small family, strange occurrences begin to plague the village. The Thorn family, who gave their name to the village have lived close by since pre-Christian times, were once the guardians of a strange cup of greenish stone and set with jewels. When it was lost; sold to a Jewish collector in Austria by the black sheep of the family who absconded with it in the 1920's, the family's fortune soon followed suit. Rumoured to have been stolen by the Nazis during the war it has now turned up at Sotheby's and the last of the Thorns is determined to get it back by proving the original sale false. Bartlemy joins his friend, Rowena Thorn, in her campaign. But the matter becomes complicated and sinister when Nathan discovers the body of the Austrian owner in the wood nearby and begins to experience disturbing visions involving the cup itself. 376 pages. The Politician: An Insider's Account of John Edward's Pursuit of the Presidency and the Scandal That Brought Him Down, Andrew Young
6 Andrew Young The Politician: An Insider's Account of John Edward's Pursuit of the Presidency and the Scandal That Brought Him Down
St. Martin's Press 238116 New York 2010 First Edition 031264065X / 9780312640651 Hardcover Very Good Condition Very Good "The greatest political saga, the one that has it all, that gets to the real heart of American politics, is the John Edwards story... This isn't just politics, it's literature. It's the great American novel, the kind that isn't written anymore." --Michael Wolff on John Edwards's trajectory, on "VanityFair.com"The underside of modern American politics -- raw ambition, manipulation, and deception -- are revealed in detail by Andrew Young's riveting account of a presidential hopeful's meteoric rise and scandalous fall. Like a non-fiction version of "All the King's Men," "The Politician" offers a truly disturbing, even shocking perspective on the risks taken and tactics employed by a man determined to rule the most powerful nation on earth. Idealistic and ambitious, Andrew Young volunteered for the John Edwards campaign for Senate in 1998 and quickly became the candidate's right hand man. As the senator became a national star, Young's responsibilities grew. For a decade he was this politician's confidant and he was assured he was 'like family." In time, however, Young was drawn into a series of questionable assignments that culminated with Edwards asking him to help conceal the Senator's ongoing adultery. Days before the 2008 presidential primaries began, Young gained international notoriety when he told the world that he was the father of a child being carried by a woman named Rielle Hunter, who was actually the senator's mistress. While Young began a life on the run, hiding from the press with his family and alleged mistress, John Edwards continued to pursue the presidency and then the Vice Presidency in the future Obama administration.Young had been the senator's closest aide and most trusted friend. He believed that John Edwards could be a great president, and was assured throughout the cover-up that his boss and friend would ultimately step forward to both tell the truth and protect his aide's career. Neither promise was kept. Not only a moving personal account of Andrew Young's political education, THE POLITICIAN offers a look at the trajectory which made John Edwards the ideal Democratic candidate for president, and the hubris which brought him down, leaving his career, his marriage and his dreams in ashes. 301 pages. Ruxton: A Biography, Anne Blair
9 Anne Blair Ruxton: A Biography
Allen & Unwin 237448 Australia 2004 1741142229 / 9781741142228 Trade Paperback Good Condition Bruce Ruxton has been in the news since 1968, when he was elected Victorian state vice-president of the RSL. For 35 years, he has spoken out on compulsory national service, South Africa, Aboriginal land rights, Japanese war crimes, the use of the word Anzac' in commercial advertising, and more latterly, women in the armed forces, homosexuality in the armed forces, the Bill of Rights, the flag, Japanese investment in Australia, amalgamation of local councils, the republican debate, multiculturalism and Asian migration.Ruxton has seldom been quoted in the press without the words controversial' or outspoken' appearing before his name. As state president of the Victorian RSL, he worked a sixteen to eighteen hour day ensuring that veterans had their full pension rights and entitlements. He took up the difficult task of ensuring the provision of retirement accommodation and nursing homes for an ageing population of World War II ex-services men and women, and of a growing number of widows. After The Sun newspaper predicted in 1984 that the Anzac Day march might die due to falling numbers of participants, it was Bruce Ruxton who revived it, turning the dawn service at the Shrine of Remembrance into a significant event in Australian national culture, with growing numbers of young people attending each year. In this first official biography of an outstanding Australian, Anne Blair gives us this astute, funny, decisive, kind, outspoken and controversial man in all his complexity. As Jeff Kennett said at Ruxton's last RSL conference, Bruce is a little man with a very big heart and a very big mouth he has used both very, very effectively.' Fourth Estate 244361 Great Britain 2004 0007196911 / 9780007196913 Softcover Good Condition Pulitzer Prize-winning author Annie Proulx follows the success of Close Range with another remarkable collection of short stories set in Wyoming. Bad Dirt is filled with the vivid and willful characters for which Proulx has become known. Each occupies a community or landscape described in rich and robust language, with an eye for detail unparalleled in American fiction. In 'The Contest', the men of Elk Tooth, Wyoming, vow to put aside their razors for two seasons and wait to see who has the longest beard come the 4th of July. Deb Sipple, the moving protagonist of 'That Trickle Down Effect', finds that his opportunism -- and his smoking habit -- lead to a massive destruction. And 'What Kind of Furniture Would Jesus Pick?' is the story of Gilbert Wolfscale, whose rabid devotion to his ranch drives off his wife and sons. Proulx displays her wit in every story of this stunning collection, as well as her knowledge of the West, of history, of ranching and farming. Her profound sympathy for characters who must use sheer will and courage to make it in tough territory makes this collection extraordinarily compelling. 219 pages. Pages browned. Back Bay Books 242952 USA 1999 0316899984 / 9780316899987 Softcover Good Condition No Dust Jacket The acclaimed bestseller--a selection of Oprah's Book Club--that brings vividly to life the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, DC, circa 1925, a community reeling from a young girl's tragic death. Five-year-old Clara Bynum is dead, drowned in the Potomac River in the shadow of a seemingly haunted rock outcropping known locally as the Three Sisters. River, Cross My Heart, which marks the debut of a wonderfully gifted new storyteller, weighs the effect of Clara's absence on the people she has left behind: her parents, Alice and Willie Bynum, torn between the old world of their rural North Carolina home and the new world of the city, to which they have moved in search of a better life for themselves and their children; the friends and relatives of the Bynum family in the Georgetown neighborhood they now call home; and, most especially, Clara's sister, ten-year-old Johnnie Mae, who must come to terms with the powerful and confused emotions stirred by her sister's death as she struggles to decide what kind of woman she will become. This highly accomplished first novel resonates with ideas, impassioned lyricism, and poignant historical detail as it captures an essential part of the African-American experience in our century. 245 pages. It explores the implications this connection has for the status of nursing as a profession, and re-examines some of the fundamental questions that the nursing profession has tried to address, such as: * what is nursing care? * who should do it? * why is it so difficult to manage the provision of nursing care? Gender and the Professional Predicament in Nursing demonstrates that once nurses try to define and shape the nature of their work they are marginalized or silenced. Frequent descriptions of them as 'sentimental', 'divided' or 'incompetent' highlight the need to understand nurses' exclusion from policy debates, and why their voices are so seldom heard. Celia Davies contends that in a society divided by gender, defining nursing as women's work is deeply contradictory. We value nurses but devalue nursing. She suggests that alongside the debates about managerial efficiency in the NHS we need another kind of debate about how we organize health and social care, about what we mean by professionalism and about the worth of caring work. This book is important reading for students of women's studies, nursing, allied professions in health and medicine, policy makers and human resource managers. 220 pages.
