Prometheus and Other Plays: Prometheus Bound; The Suppliants; Seven Against Thebes and The Persians, Aeschylus [Phillip Vellacott - Translated with an introduction]
2 Aeschylus [Phillip Vellacott - Translated with an introduction] Prometheus and Other Plays: Prometheus Bound; The Suppliants; Seven Against Thebes and The Persians
Penguin Classics 240239 London, England. 1966 Reprint Softcover Good Condition (ex-library) No Dust Jacket The first of the great Greek Tragedians, Aeschylus wrote a large number of plays, of which seven survive. Of the four included in this volume, The Persians is unique in Greek tragedy in having as its subject matter a recent historical event, the defeat of the Persians at the famous battle of Salamis. The other three, Prometheus, The Suppliants and Seven Against Thebes, were all written as parts of trilogies and take their themes from Greek legend, but in each Aeschylus' interpretation reflects the new morality of classical Athens. Thus, in Seven Against Thebes the fate of the two main figures, Eteocles and Polyneices, is not entirely controlled by the gods, for Eteocles is free to choose whether or not he should fight his brother. And in Prometheus and The Suppliants Aeschylus shows that although the struggle of reason against violence can never be an easy one, it is reason that is the proper principle of civilized life. 160 pages. Gardens By The Sea, Alexandra d'Arnoux, Erica Lennard and Bruno de Laubadere
4 Alexandra d'Arnoux, Erica Lennard and Bruno de Laubadere Gardens By The Sea
Clarkson Potter Publishers 231409 New York 2002 0609605682 / 9780609605684 Hardcover Near Fine Condition Near Fine Large Book - between A4 and A3 The mix of sensuous sea air and rolling landscapes of flora and rock produce incredibly evocative gardens. Whether wild and rambling, sprouting naturally from the surrounding landscape, or a formally designed property punctuated with sculpture, oceanside gardens are infused with romance and beauty and ?lled with some of the most exceptional examples of horticultural art in the world. Author Alexandra d'Arnoux understands the pairing of the man-made and the shore. Her highly successful Family Houses by the Sea is a concert of retreat and natural splendor; here she visits, with Bruno de Laubadère and celebrated photographer Erica Lennard, talented creators and their masterful gardens along the shores of the United States, Europe, and the Mediterranean. Gardens by the Sea gives an unprecedented view of these gardens, some never before open to the public eye. With creations along the coasts of New England and California and exotic gardens in Europe, each scene is vibrant in detail. Each garden in the book is a fresh fantasy, a trip to a very special place. Bagman To Swagman: Tales of Broome, The North-West and Other Australian Adventures, Alistair McAlpine
6 Alistair McAlpine Bagman To Swagman: Tales of Broome, The North-West and Other Australian Adventures
Allen & Unwin 240016 Australia 1999 1865083895 / 9781865083896 Softcover Very Good Condition Alistair McAlpine has conducted a lifelong love affair with Australia. He's bought large chunks of it, developed some and turned others into a zoo and nature parks, and has travelled much of the length and breadth of the Continent.Arriving in Australia in his early twenties as a junior member of the English family building conglomerate McAlpines, he soon became involved in building Perth's first luxury hotel, the famous Parmelia and other projects followed. He was a pioneer of 'eco-tourism' with his development of Broome, creating the world-famous Cable Beach Club and also a remarkable zoo, which rapidly became known for the success of its breeding programs for the world's endangered species.A restless soul, Alistair McAlpine has continually traversed the country by light aircraft and four-wheel drive and his deep love and respect for the Australian outback and its people comes through these pages. An inveterate collector of art, artefacts and characters, Alistair McAlpine has long been concerned that Aboriginal artists should receive the recognition and rewards that are their due. He has spent many years building up superb collections of Aboriginal paintings and totems, some of which have now been donated to the Australian people, along with his collection of Australian and European sculpture, paintings and photographs.Familiar of prime ministers and royalty, friend of swagmen and Aborigines, Alistair McAlpine s Bagman to Swagman, the second volume of his memoirs, written in his own inimitable style, is redolent with humour, wisdom and a deep and abiding love for Australia and its people. 298 pages. At Large and At Small: Confessions of a Literary Hedonist, Anne Fadiman
10 Anne Fadiman At Large and At Small: Confessions of a Literary Hedonist
Penguin Books 233958 Great Britain 2008 0141033991 / 9780141033990 Softcover Good Condition In At Large and At Small, Anne Fadiman returns to one of her favorite genres, the familiar essay--a beloved and hallowed literary tradition recognized for both its intellectual breadth and its miniaturist focus on everyday experiences. With the combination of humor and erudition that has distinguished her as one of our finest essayists, Fadiman draws us into twelve of her personal obsessions: from her slightly sinister childhood enthusiasm for catching butterflies to her monumental crush on Charles Lamb, from her wistfulness for the days of letter-writing to the challenges and rewards of moving from the city to the country. Many of these essays were composed "under the influence" of the subject at hand. Fadiman ingests a shocking amount of ice cream and divulges her passion for Haagen-Dazs Chocolate Chocolate Chip and her brother's homemade Liquid Nitrogen Kahlua Coffee (recipe included); she sustains a terrific caffeine buzz while recounting Balzac's coffee addiction; and she stays up till dawn to write about being a night owl, examining the rhythms of our circadian clocks and sharing such insomnia cures as her father's nocturnal word games and Lewis Carroll's mathematical puzzles. At Large and At Small is a brilliant and delightful collection of essays that harkens a revival of a long-cherished genre. 220 pages. Previous owners name on front blank endpaper. A Lion Called Christian: The True Story of the Remarkable Bond Between Two Friends and A Lion, Anthony Bourke and John Rendall
11 Anthony Bourke and John Rendall A Lion Called Christian: The True Story of the Remarkable Bond Between Two Friends and A Lion
Broadway books 238056 New York 2008 0767932307 / 9780767932301 Hardcover Very Good Condition Very Good In 2008 an extraordinary two-minute film clip appeared on YouTube and immediately became an international phenomenon. It captures the moving reunion of two young men and their pet lion Christian, after they had left him in Africa with Born Free's George Adamson to introduce him into his rightful home in the wild. A Lion Called Christian tells the remarkable story of how Anthony "Ace" Bourke and John Rendall, visitors to London from Australia in 1969, bought the boisterous lion cub in the pet department of Harrods. For several months, the three of them shared a flat above a furniture shop on London's King's Road, where the charismatic and intelligent Christian quickly became a local celebrity, cruising the streets in the back of a Bentley, popping in for lunch at a local restaurant, even posing for a fashion advertisement. But the lion cub was growing up-fast-and soon even the walled church garden where he went for exercise wasn't large enough for him. How could Ace and John avoid having to send Christian to a zoo for the rest of his life? A coincidental meeting with English actors Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers, stars of the hit film Born Free, led to Christian being flown to Kenya and placed under the expert care of "the father of lions" George Adamson. Incredibly, when Ace and John returned to Kenya to see Christian a year later, they received a loving welcome from their lion, who was by then fully integrated into Africa and a life with other lions. 226 pages. In fact, Australia has more things that can kill you in a very nasty way than anywhere else. Ignoring such dangers - and yet curiously obsessed by them - Bill Bryson journeyed to Australia and promptly fell in love with the country. And who can blame him? The people are cheerful, extrovert, quick-witted and unfailingly obliging: their cities are safe and clean and nearly always built on water; the food is excellent; the beer is cold and the sun nearly always shines.
