Mr Midshipman Easy, Captain Marryat
4 Captain Marryat Mr Midshipman Easy
Rylee Classics 236448 London 1950 Hardcover Good Condition Good In this stirring tale from the days of wooden ships, a young sailor enters the king's service with some firm but untried egalitarian notions. "Equality Jack" -- known formally as Mr. Midshipman Easy -- is initiated into the rigid hierarchy of the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars. His adventures were recounted in 1836 by the founder and master of naval fiction, Captain Frederick Marryat (1792-1848), who entered the service as a fourteen-year-old midshipman and resigned twenty-four years later to devote himself to writing. He based this novel on his own experiences sailing with Lord Thomas Cochrane, the real-life model for Horatio Hornblower and Jack Aubrey. Marrayat combines a sharp wit and sense of irony with realism born of firsthand knowledge of seafaring life. Joseph Conrad praised his works as "enthralling," adding, "His greatness is undeniable." Virginia Woolf declared, "Marryat has the power to set us in the midst of ships and men and sea and sky, all vivid, credible, authentic." 251 pages. Light foxing to outer page edges. A bit worn around the edges with a few bumps collected no doubt over the years from normal use.. Illustrated in colour. The publication date given above is an estimate only, there being no date given in the book. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 1-2 kilos. Category: Fiction; Fiction; Inventory No: 236448. The Elsewhere Community, Hugh Kenner
15 Hugh Kenner The Elsewhere Community
Allen & Unwin 241255 Australia 1998 1864488727 / 9781864488722 Softcover Very Good Condition 'This grand tour of books, writers and places both physical and of the mind - conducted by one of the grand critics and teachers of our time - is above all a highly civilised confirmation that, when all is said and done, great literature is the source of profound insights into the unchanging nature of human experience.' Andrew Riemer'.Kenner's book is both a time capsule and eloquent reminiscence. Anyone interested in mid-twentieth century literature and criticism should read it.' Mark Davis'Sunlight unwinds from the pages in this trip of a lifetime. It's On the Road with the best minds of all generations, from Galileo to Bugs Bunny, from cyber seniors to the girl next door. A joyride.' Richard NevilleExile, identity and fantasy were the themes of the Massey Lectures delivered by internationally acclaimed man of letters Hugh Kenner. The Elsewhere Community provocatively examines the idea that Western culture has a constant need for stimulation encountered elsewhere. Kenner traces this trend from the eighteenth century's Grand Tour, wherein young Englishmen travelled Europe before beginning their careers, to the self-imposed exile of modernist writers, to the disembodied global journeys the Internet offers up to us today.Hugh Kenner is the Fuller E. Callaway Professor of English at the University of Georgia. He has published over thirty books, including studies of Ezra pound, Samuel Beckett, James Joyce and Bugs Bunny!Following the success of John Ralston Saul's Massey Lectures The Unconscious Civilization ABC Radio National will broadcast The Elsewhere Community over Christmas 1998. 113 pages.
