The Sunday Philosophy Club, Alexander McCall Smith
184 Alexander McCall Smith The Sunday Philosophy Club
Abacus 228241 Great Britain 2006 0349118698 / 9780349118697 Softcover Very Good Condition Amateur sleuth Isabel Dalhousie is a philosopher who also uses her training to solve unusual mysteries. Isabel is Editor of the Review of Applied Ethics - which addresses such questions as 'Truth telling in sexual relationships' - and she also hosts The Sunday Philosophy Club at her house in Edinburgh. Behind the city's Georgian facades its moral compasses are spinning with greed, dishonesty and murderous intent. Instinct tells Isabel that the young man who tumbled to his death in front of her eyes at a concert in the Usher Hall didn't fall. He was pushed. The Sunday Philosophy Club marks new territory - but familiar moral ground - from the author of The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency. With Isabel Dalhousie Alexander McCall Smith introduces a new and pneumatic female sleuth to tackle murder, mayhem - and the mysteries of life. As her hero WH Auden maintained, classic detective fiction stems from a desire for an uncorrupted Eden which the detective, as an agent of God, can return to us. But then Isabel, being a philosopher, has a thing or two to say about God as well. 297 pages. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 500 grams. Category: Fiction; Fiction; ISBN: 0349118698. August 1914, Alexander Solzhenitsyn
187 Alexander Solzhenitsyn August 1914
Farrar, Straus and Giroux 233060 New York 1972 0374106843 / 9780374106843 Hardcover Very Good Condition Very Good Translated by Michael Glenny. In his monumental narrative of the outbreak of the First World War and the ill-fated Russian offensive into East Prussia, Solzhenitsyn has written what Nina Krushcheva, in The Nation, calls "a dramatically new interpretation of Russian history." The assassination of tsarist prime minister Pyotr Stolypin, a crucial event in the years leading up to the Revolution of 1917, is reconstructed from the alienating viewpoints of historical witnesses. The sole voice of reason among the advisers to Tsar Nikolai II, Stolypin died at the hands of the anarchist Mordko Bogrov, and with him perished Russia's last hope for reform. Translated by H.T. Willetts. August 1914 is the first volume of Solzhenitsyn's epic, The Red Wheel; the second is November 1916. Each of the subsequent volumes will concentrate on another critical moment or "knot," in the history of the Revolution. Translated by H.T. Willetts. Map endpapers. 622 pages. The First Circle, Alexander Solzhenitsyn
189 Alexander Solzhenitsyn The First Circle
Heron Books 235615 1971 Hardcover Good Condition Reynald Schmid [Frontispiece] Jan Parker At the height of Stalin's postwar terror, Innokenty, a young diplomat and scion of a corrupt ruling class, discovers an earlier and more spiritual tradition than that adopted by the October Revolution, the beginning of a process which is Solzhenitsyn's basic theme: the individual's experience of acquiring an immortal soul. Unwisely but generously, Innokenty helps a friend in danger of arrest, only to be arrested himself and sent to a special prison. This, the archetype of the Gulag, is described with masterful psychological insight. There are no heroes and hardly any villains; oppressors are no less victims then the oppressed. In the great tradition of the Russian novel, The First Circle is both a brooding account of human nature and a scrupulously exact description of a historical period. TRanslated by Michael Guyhon. Introduction by Arnold B. McMillin. Red decorative boards. 578 pages. Foxing to endpapers . Illustrator: Reynald Schmid [Frontispiece] Jan Parker. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 1-2 kilos. Author Alexandra d'Arnoux understands the pairing of the man-made and the shore. Her highly successful Family Houses by the Sea is a concert of retreat and natural splendor; here she visits, with Bruno de Laubadère and celebrated photographer Erica Lennard, talented creators and their masterful gardens along the shores of the United States, Europe, and the Mediterranean. Efraim's Book, Alfred Andersch
199 Alfred Andersch Efraim's Book
King Penguin 226288 USA 1984 0140046216 / 9780140046212 Softcover Good Condition Efraim's Book is the sophisticated, offbeat novel about the peculiar society of post-World-II Berlin. Its hero George Efraim is a Jewish reporter who has fought for the British on the Italian front and lost both parents to Auschwitz. He returns home to Berlin in 1962 for the first time since the war to investigate the wartime disappearance of his editor's daughter, only to begin writing a novel, which helps him "to embark on a certain arrangement of signs with the help of which I hope to chart my position." Like the great German novels of Günter Grass and Heinrich Böll, Alfred Andersch's Efraim's Book grapples with the legacy of World War II and the Holocaust in all its horror and sad humanity. A troubling yet often humorous book, it offers a poignant account of the traumatized German state. 298 pages. Light tanning to pages. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 500 grams. Adventures of a Chemist Collector, Alfred Bader
200 Alfred Bader Adventures of a Chemist Collector
Weidenfeld & Nicolson 227540 London 1995 First Edition 0297834614 / 9780297834618 Hardcover Near Fine Condition Near Fine This is the autobiography of the distinguished chemist, art collector and philanthropist, Alfred Bader. Born in Vienna, Bader fled to England at the age of 14, ten months before the outbreak of World War II. Although a Jewish refugee from the Nazis, he was interned in 1940 and sent to a Canadian prisoner-of-war camp. In this book, he tells the story of his success in the United States. It was a case of hard study and hard work. Obtaining his release in 1941, he was accepted by Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, where he studied engineering chemistry. There followed a fellowship in organic chemistry at Harvard. Bader worked in Milwaukee as a research chemist for Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company and in 1951 co-founded Aldrich, which today, as Sigma-Aldrich, is the world's largest supplier of research chemicals. After leaving Sigma-Aldrich, he continued a fruitful career as an art collector and dealer. Alfred Bader and his family have a reputation as generous benefactors, notably in the fields of chemistry, education and Jewish interests. In 1992, Bader gave #6 million to Queen's University, Ontario, to purchase and renovate Herstmonceux Castle in Sussex 288 pages. Illustrated with black and white photographs. Quantity Available: 1.
