Until then no navy had attempted to destroy a fllet with aircraft. and it was believed in this case that the attack could only be successful if it were conducted within range of guns. There were some fanatics who predicted that an effective strike could be made by the flimsy slow flying aeroplanes of the Fleet air Arm. The fantatics proved to be right. They took off from the carrier Illustrious and flew 170 miles into air naval history and fought a battle that was to become known as ' the Trafalgar of the Air' They crippled the Italian fleet and altered the course of the war in the Mediterranean.
