True Colours - My Life, Adam Gilchrist
6 Adam Gilchrist True Colours - My Life
MacMillan 240729 Australia 2008 1405038969 / 9781405038966 Hardcover Near Fine Condition Very Good Many critics believe Adam Gilchrist is the greatest wicketkeeper/batsman to have played the game, but Adam's huge popularity does not rest solely on his incredible track record. To his millions of fans around the world, it is the way he plays the game - rather than simply the sum of his achievements - that marks him out as one of the best-loved cricketers of his generation. True Colours is his autobiography, and like the man himself it's incomparable. With unflinching honesty, intelligence, compassion and humour, Adam takes you into the world of cricket that few outside of the Australian team have ever seen. Falling Leaves - The True Story of an Unwanted Chinese Daughter, Adeline Yen Mah
7 Adeline Yen Mah Falling Leaves - The True Story of an Unwanted Chinese Daughter
Penguin Books 239349 Great Britain 1997 0140265988 / 9780140265989 Softcover Very Good Condition Born in 1937 in a port city a thousand miles north of Shanghai, Adeline Yen Mah was the youngest child of an affluent Chinese family who enjoyed rare privileges during a time of political and cultural upheaval. But wealth and position could not shield Adeline from a childhood of appalling emotional abuse at the hands of a cruel and manipulative Eurasian stepmother. Determined to survive through her enduring faith in family unity, Adeline struggled for independence as she moved from Hong Kong to England and eventually to the United States to become a physician and writer. A compelling, painful, and ultimately triumphant story of a girl's journey into adulthood, Adeline's story is a testament to the most basic of human needs: acceptance, love, and understanding. With a powerful voice that speaks of the harsh realities of growing up female in a family and society that kept girls in emotional chains, "Falling Leaves" is a work of heartfelt intimacy and a rare authentic portrait of twentieth-century China. 248 pages. 14 Minutes - A Running Legend's Life And Death And Life, Alberto Salazar
11 Alberto Salazar 14 Minutes - A Running Legend's Life And Death And Life
Rodale 240508 USA 2012 1609619986 / 9781609619985 Trade Paperback Near Fine Condition No Dust Jacket In 2007, after collapsing on a practice field at the Nike campus, champion marathoner Alberto Salazar's heart stopped beating for 14 minutes. Over the crucial moments that followed, rescuers administered CPR to feed oxygen to his brain and EMTs shocked his heart eight times with defibrillator paddles. He was clinically dead. But miraculously, Salazar was back at the Nike campus coaching his runners just nine days later. Salazar had faced death before, but he survived that and numerous other harrowing episodes thanks to his raw physical talent, maniacal training habits, and sheer will, as well as--he strongly believes--divine grace. In 14 Minutes, Salazar chronicles in spellbinding detail how a shy, skinny Cuban-American kid from the suburbs of Boston was transformed into the greatest marathon runner of his era. For the first time, he reveals his tempestuous relationship with his father, a former ally of Fidel Castro; his early running life in high school with the Greater Boston Track Club; his unhealthy obsession to train through pain; the dramatic wins in New York, Boston, and South Africa; and how surviving 14 minutes of death taught him to live again. 260 pages. Illustrated with black and white photographs. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilogram. Category: Autobiography::Memoir; Biography & Autobiography; ISBN/EAN: 9781609619985. The Strange Alchemy of Life and Law, Albie Sachs
12 Albie Sachs The Strange Alchemy of Life and Law
Oxford University Press 231021 Oxford 2011 0199605777 / 9780199605774 Softcover Near Fine Condition From a young age Albie Sachs played a prominent part in the struggle for justice in South Africa. As a result he was detained in solitary confinement, tortured by sleep deprivation and eventually blown up by a car bomb which cost him his right arm and the sight of an eye. His experiences provoked an outpouring of creative thought on the role of law as a protector of human dignity in the modern world, and a lifelong commitment to seeing a new era of justice established in South Africa. After playing an important role in drafting South Africa's post-apartheid Constitution, he was appointed by Nelson Mandela to be a member of the country's first Constitutional Court. Over the course of his fifteen year term on the Court he has grappled with the major issues confronting modern South Africa, and the challenges posed to the fledgling democracy as it sought to overcome the injustices of the apartheid regime. As his term on the Court approaches its end, Sachs here conveys in intimate fashion what it has been like to be a judge in these unique circumstances, how his extraordinary life has influenced his approach to the cases before him, and his views on the nature of justice and its achievement through law. The book provides unique access to an insider's perspective on modern South Africa, and a rare glimpse into the working of a judicial mind. By juxtaposing life experiences and extracts from judgments, Sachs enables the reader to see the complex and surprising ways in which legal culture transforms subjective experience into objectively reasoned decisions. With rare candour he tells of the difficulties he has when preparing a judgment, of how every judgment is a lie. Rejecting purely formal notions of the judicial role he shows how both reason and passion (concern for protecting human dignity) are required for law to work in the service of justice. 306 pages. Adventures of a Chemist Collector, Alfred Bader
14 Alfred Bader Adventures of a Chemist Collector
Weidenfeld & Nicolson 227540 London 1995 First Edition 0297834614 / 9780297834618 Hardcover Near Fine Condition Near Fine This is the autobiography of the distinguished chemist, art collector and philanthropist, Alfred Bader. Born in Vienna, Bader fled to England at the age of 14, ten months before the outbreak of World War II. Although a Jewish refugee from the Nazis, he was interned in 1940 and sent to a Canadian prisoner-of-war camp. In this book, he tells the story of his success in the United States. It was a case of hard study and hard work. Obtaining his release in 1941, he was accepted by Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, where he studied engineering chemistry. There followed a fellowship in organic chemistry at Harvard. Bader worked in Milwaukee as a research chemist for Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company and in 1951 co-founded Aldrich, which today, as Sigma-Aldrich, is the world's largest supplier of research chemicals. After leaving Sigma-Aldrich, he continued a fruitful career as an art collector and dealer. Alfred Bader and his family have a reputation as generous benefactors, notably in the fields of chemistry, education and Jewish interests. In 1992, Bader gave #6 million to Queen's University, Ontario, to purchase and renovate Herstmonceux Castle in Sussex 288 pages. Illustrated with black and white photographs. Quantity Available: 1. Without Reservations: The Travels of an Independent Woman, Alice Steinbach
16 Alice Steinbach Without Reservations: The Travels of an Independent Woman
Bantam Books 238179 Australia 2000 1863253769 / 9781863253765 Softcover Very Good Condition Without Reservations is about a woman's dream come true - taking a year off to travel the world and rediscover what it is like to be an independent woman, without ties and without reservations. 'In many ways, I was an independent woman,' writes Alice Steinbach, single working mother and Pulitzer prize-winnning journalist. 'For years I'd made my own choices, paid my own bills, shovelled my own snow, and had relationships that allowed for a lot of freedom on both sides.' Slowly, however, she saw that she had become quite dependent in another way. 'I had fallen into the habit of defining myself in terms of who I was to other people and what they expected of me.' Who am I, she wanted to know, away from the things that define me - my family, children, job, friends? Steinbach searches for the answer in some of the most exciting places in the world- Paris, where she finds a soulmate in a Japanese man; Oxford, where she learns more from a ballroom dancing lesson than any of her studies; Milan, where she befriends a young woman about to be married. Beautifully illustrated with postcards Steinbach wrote home to herself, this is an unforgettable voyage of discovery 278 pages. Black and white illustrations. Quantity Available: 1.
