Anzac Memories: Living With The Legend, Alistair Thomson
6 Alistair Thomson Anzac Memories: Living With The Legend
Oxford University Press 236134 Melbourne 1995 0195537432 / 9780195537437 Softcover Very Good Condition The Anzac (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) legend rests upon the assumption that Australia came of age as a nation when the Anzacs landed on Gallipoli on April 25, 1915 during the First World War. This legend is integral to the Australian sense of nationhood and national character. In this highly original book, Alistair Thompson explores both the creation of the legend, and, most crucially, its effect upon those who have lived in its shadow--the survivors of the great war. Looking at the legend's changing significance for Australian politics and society, the author draws on personal interviews with surviving war veterans, as well as the official histories of Charles Bean, and the depiction of Anzacs in nineties novels and movies. 280 pages. Documents on Art and Taste in Australia The Colonial Period 1770-1914, Bernard Smith - Editor
13 Bernard Smith - Editor Documents on Art and Taste in Australia The Colonial Period 1770-1914
Oxford University Press 226964 Australia 1979 0195504763 / 9780195504767 Trade Paperback Good Condition No Dust Jacket This book brings together, in the form of an annotated critical anthology, a selection of writings by, or about, artists who lived and worked in Australia between 1770 and 1914. The extracts are arranged chronologically and by topic in order to illustrate the current preoccupations of a period. The author has built his selections round the two themes of Art and Nature, providing a wide variety of approach while at the same time indicating, in his own commentary, the ways in which these ideas were linked to the emergence of traditional attitudes. Each chapter contains an explanatory introduction, biographical notes about the authors of each extract, and annotations of the texts. People who want to understand the beginnings of Australian art from the points of view of those who brought that art into existence will find this book fascinating. 299 pages. Spine faded. The enemy was snaking its way towards the Australian coastline. Broome was being evacuated. The resident Japanese and their families had already been interned. Aboriginal families were being trucked to Beagle Bay Mission, 120 km north, under the care of the German brothers and Irish nuns. Betty Lockyer's mother was on the last truck to leave Broome on 17 February, heavy with child. Worst fears were realised when the Japanese attacked Darwin.
