2 Alan Eason The A-Z of Bradman
ABC Books 244742 Sydney 2004 0733315178 / 9780733315176 Trade Paperback Very Good Condition the A-Z of Bradman is an indispensable guide for all cricket fans and all those who recognise Sir Donald Bradman as a great Australian. From Aberdeen, where Bradman played his last innings in Great Britain, to Zanetti, whose cartoon eloquently caught the mood of Australia following his death, this book is a comprehensive companion to the life and career of the world's greatest cricketer. the entries include entertaining sidelights such as 'Granny' Scholz, the Cootamundra midwife who delivered Donald George Bradman, thus literally becoming the first person to get him out, and the plague of grasshoppers that he encountered in Canada in 1932. Alan Eason's careful and comprehensive research has been organised into more than 900 readable entries which give clear details of the lives of Bradman and his family, together with his acquaintances, friends, teammates, and even Oscar Bunt, the Southern Highlands table tennis champion whose invincibility was dented by Bradman at Bowral in 1925. 352 pages. Bradman - An Australian Hero, Charles Williams
12 Charles Williams Bradman - An Australian Hero
Abacus 237649 Great Britain 1997 0349109400 / 9780349109404 Softcover Very Good Condition No Dust Jacket BRADMAN is a masterly portrait of cricket's supreme batsman and Australia's greatest hero. Uniquely among biographers of Don Bradman, Charles Williams sets his subject's cricketing achievements within the context of a crucial period in the history of modern Australia, a time when, as the country felt her way towards something that the world would recognise as 'nationhood', Bradman became a focus for national aspirations, a figure of unique status. Brilliantly revealing the phenomenon of Bradman's cricketing genius and the tensions that genius created for the man, his family, team-mates and the game's administrators - Williams' story is as much about Australia as it is a great Australian. 336 pages. Harold Larwood: The Authorized Biography of the World's Fastest Bowler, Duncan Hamilton
19 Duncan Hamilton Harold Larwood: The Authorized Biography of the World's Fastest Bowler
Quercus 244693 Great Britain 2009 First Edition 1847249493 / 9781847249494 Hardcover Near Fine Condition Near Fine The Nottinghamshire bowler Harold Larwood was his country's chief weapon in the notorious 1932-3 Ashes tour, during which England's fast bowlers used so-called 'Bodyline' tactics to counter the threat posed by the great Australian batsman Don Bradman. Larwood's pace and hostility left Australia's batsmen battered, reduced Bradman to the status of mere mortal - and brought England a 4-1 series victory. But the fury it engendered brought Anglo-Australian relations to the brink of collapse. After the series Larwood was used as a scapegoat by the MCC, which demanded he apologise for his intimidatory bowling. Arguing that he had simply obeyed the instructions of his captain Douglas Jardine, Larwood refused. He never played for England again. Frustrated and depressed, in 1953 he was encouraged to emigrate to Australia by some of the same men he had played against and injured in 1932-3. The saga of Bodyline has been told before, but Larwood's own tale, particularly his attitude to the 1932-3 series and his shoddy treatment by the establishment there-after, has not. Using materials provided by Larwood's family, Duncan Hamilton charts the peaks and troughs of Larwood's life: from his mining village upbringing, through his rise to stardom, the shock of Bodyline and its traumatic aftermath, to his emigration to Sydney, where he and his family found happiness. Hamilton examines what his story tells us about issues of class and social standing in early 20th-century Britain, and about the codes and hierarchies that existed in a game that distinguish-ed rigidly between public-school amateurs and working-class professionals A thrilling and moving recreation of the triumph, betrayal and redemption of a working-class hero and forgotten titan of English cricket, Harold Larwood will enthral and delight not only cricket fans, but all those who relish biographical writing of the highest quality. 388 pages. Illustrated. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 1-2 kilos. Category: Sport::Cricket; Sports & Pastimes; ISBN/EAN: 9781847249494. Inventory No: 244693. Hardcover
