Kilns - Design, Construction and Operation, Daniel Rhodes
6 Daniel Rhodes Kilns - Design, Construction and Operation
Sir Isaac Pitman and Sons Ltd 232098 London 1969 0273403192 / 9780273403197 Hardcover Good Condition Fair 'Without a knowledge of the action of fire, the potter's craft would not exist,' and it is that action which Daniel Rhodes thoroughly explores and explicates in 'Kilns.' In writing this book, Rhodes has drawn upon his own understanding of firing processes, as well as information which he has gathered from sources throughout the world. The first section of the book traces the development of individual kilns, stressing their firing principles and their strengths and weaknesses. Beginning with primitive firing methods, Rhodes moves on to the evolution of kilns in China, Korea, and Japan, and then discusses the history and growth of Europeans kilns. The principles and methods involved in kiln design and construction receive a thorough and authoritative treatment. The information which applies to the structure and size of any kiln, be it gas-fired, oil-fired, wood burning, or electric, up draft or downdraft, is the basis for discussion of methods and procedures required by specific kilns. Thus, all of the aspects of kiln construction and design... masonry construction, fuels, burners, and combustion, refractory materials, heat retention, and transfer... are covered. One section is totally devoted to kiln operation. Firing theory and techniques, temperature measurement and control, and safety precautions are among the areas covered. Many original kiln designs, accompanied by step-by-step instructions and diagrams, enable those who wish to build a kiln to proceed with both knowledge and confidence. The book is illustrated throughout with numerous drawings, diagrams, tables, and photographs. 240 pages. Dust jacket has rubbing and small tears to edges and corners and associated wear. Dust Jacket price-clipped. Black and white illustrations. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 1-2 kilos. Kiln Building with Space-Age Materials, Frank A. Colson
9 Frank A. Colson Kiln Building with Space-Age Materials
Van Nostrand Reinhold Company 232097 New York 1975 0442216416 / 9780442216412 Softcover Good Condition Nancy Nugent Since the development of new materials, a number of products have emerged which drastically change the basic approach toward construction and firing techniques. No longer is it necessary to think in terms of heavy, bulky kilns which require huge amounts of fuel input to create the proper heat conditions for bringing clay to maturity and glazes to flow. New approaches are needed to accompany they way these new materials are used and how they can serve the needs of the craftsman. The information in this book is aimed at showing the individual artist-craftsman how to use new materials in the construction of pottery kilns. What are the new materials an how do they work to make a better kiln for the potter? Among the most available and diversified of the materials are the alumina-silica ceramic fibres. Weighing one-fortieth the equivalent volume of firebrick, these materials have a normal heat exposure range of 2,300 F. Another family of ceramic fibres is based on zirconium oxide. Its melting point is extremely high. An even more sophisticated ceramic fibre is the boron-nitrate-based material, which is extracted from kernite and borax. Other ceramic fibres produced for their extremely fine insulating qualities are those made from quartz and nickel. When kilns are made entirely out of ceramic fibres - without any use of bricks - the pattern of reflection and retention of heat is different; therefore, it is necessary to understand and allow for these differences when firing. This concept is discussed in chapters 4-7, each of which deals with a different type of ceramic-fibre kiln. Each kiln has been proven in operation many times over. Chapter 8 describes the different forms of ceramic fibres and binders - such as cement, liquid rigidiser, blanket, board, casting mixes - and how to use them to repair and operate conventional kilns. In addition, several kiln systems using vacuum-formed shapes are discussed as a preview of kilns of the future. 127 pages. Cover edges rubbed. Illustrator: Nancy Nugent. Quantity Available: 1. 13 Harry Davis The Potter's Alternative
Methuen 232425 Australia 1987 First Edition 045401113X / 9780454011135 Hardcover Good Condition Good In The Potter's Alternative, Harry Davis shares the wealth of experience gained from over sixty years of practical potting in Africa, Paraguay, the Argentine, England, New Zealand and Peru. During that time Harry was presented with problems that forced him to reexamine his methods and approach to pottery. The solutions and techniques that he developed and refined over the years form the basis of this book. Divided into two parts: Part I is aimed at potters who would like to be independent of supply companies by first finding, then processing their own raw materials using pug mills, blungers and ball mills; Part II teaches both potters and others the how to of tool and machine making, much of it by hand. Without a lathe or a machine shop steel roller, the novice can make a sophisticated machine such as a de-airing pug mill, or apply these skills to other fields of endeavor unrelated to pottery. 436 pages.
