Spike Milligan's anarchic writing and performing - as the creative force behind the Goons, in TV, films, theatre, his novel Puckoon, his poetry and his acerbic, witty war memoirs - have established him as one of the great anti-authoritarian figures of British comedy. Following an idyllic Indian childhood and the trauma of transplantation into depressed working-class South London, Milligan was called up for military service in 1940. It was in the Army that he found himself, first as an improvising jazz musician, then as an inspired verbal improviser and clown. But throughout his career, success has been shadowed by a debilitating depressive illness that has often made Spike's public role an intolerable burden, an illness that first appeared following his punishing war service in the North African and Italian campaigns. In Pauline Scudamore's searching biography, written with Milligan's full co-operation, Spike emerges as a sometimes difficult but painstakingly honest man - and one who has paid a high price for the pleasure he has given others. 431 pages.
