The Blair Years: Extracts from the Alistair Campbell Diaries, Alastair Campbell and Richard Stott [Editor]
4 Alastair Campbell and Richard Stott [Editor] The Blair Years: Extracts from the Alistair Campbell Diaries
Hutchinson 239960 Australia 2007 0091796296 / 9780091796297 Hardcover Very Good Condition Very Good The "Blair Years" is the most compelling and revealing account of contemporary politics you will ever read. Taken from Alastair Campbell's daily diaries, it charts the rise of New Labour and the tumultuous years of Tony Blair's leadership, providing the first important record of a remarkable decade in our national life. Here are the defining events of our time, from Labour's new dawn to the war on terror, from the death of Diana to negotiations for peace in Northern Ireland, from Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq, through to the Hutton Inquiry of 2003, the year Campbell resigned his position at No 10. But above all here is Tony Blair up close and personal, taking the decisions that affected the lives of millions, under relentless and often hostile pressure. Often described as the second most powerful figure in Britain, Alastair Campbell is no stranger to controversy. Feared and admired in equal measure, hated by some, he was pivotal to the founding of New Labour and the sensational election victory of 1997. As Blair's press secretary, strategist and trusted confidant, Campbell spent more waking hours alongside the Prime Minister than anyone. His diaires - at times brutally frank, often funny, always compelling - take the reader right to the heart of government. "The Blair Years" is a story of politics in the raw, of progress and setback, of reputations made and destroyed, under the relentless scrutiny of a 24-hour media. Unflinchingly told, it covers the crises and scandals, the rows and resignations, the ups and downs of Britain's hothouse politics. But amid the big events are insights and observations that make this a remarkably human portrayal of some of the most powerful people in the world. There has never been so riveting a book about life at the very top, nor a more human book about politics, told by a man who saw it all. 794 pages. Illustrated with black and white photographs. Death of a Dissident: The Poisoning of Alexander Litvinenko and the Return of the KGB, Alex Goldfarb with Marina Litvinenko
5 Alex Goldfarb with Marina Litvinenko Death of a Dissident: The Poisoning of Alexander Litvinenko and the Return of the KGB
Pocket Books 239696 Great Britain 2008 Updated 1847391079 / 9781847391070 Softcover Very Good Condition The first reports seemed absurd. A Russian dissident, formerly an employee of the KGB and its successor, the FSB, had seemingly been poisoned in a London hotel. As Alexander Litvinenko's condition worsened, however, and he was transferred to hospital and placed under armed guard, the story took a sinister turn. On 23 November 2006, Litvinenko died, apparently from polonium-210 radiation poisoning. He himself, in a dramatic statement from his deathbed, accused his former employers at the Kremlin of being responsible for his murder. Who was Alexander Litvinenko? What had happened in Russia since the end of the Cold War to make his life there untenable, and even in severe jeopardy in Britain? How did he really die, and who killed him? In his spokesman and close friend, Alex Goldfarb, and widow Marina, we have two people who know more than anyone about the real Sasha Litvinenko, and about his murder. Their riveting book sheds astonishing light not just on these strange and troubling events but also on the biggest crisis in relations with Russia since the fall of the Berlin Wall. 396 pages. Illustrated with black and white photographs. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilogram. Category: Biography; Biography & Autobiography; ISBN/EAN: 9781847391070. Inventory No: 239696. Adventures of a Chemist Collector, Alfred Bader
7 Alfred Bader Adventures of a Chemist Collector
Weidenfeld & Nicolson 227540 London 1995 First Edition 0297834614 / 9780297834618 Hardcover Near Fine Condition Near Fine This is the autobiography of the distinguished chemist, art collector and philanthropist, Alfred Bader. Born in Vienna, Bader fled to England at the age of 14, ten months before the outbreak of World War II. Although a Jewish refugee from the Nazis, he was interned in 1940 and sent to a Canadian prisoner-of-war camp. In this book, he tells the story of his success in the United States. It was a case of hard study and hard work. Obtaining his release in 1941, he was accepted by Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, where he studied engineering chemistry. There followed a fellowship in organic chemistry at Harvard. Bader worked in Milwaukee as a research chemist for Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company and in 1951 co-founded Aldrich, which today, as Sigma-Aldrich, is the world's largest supplier of research chemicals. After leaving Sigma-Aldrich, he continued a fruitful career as an art collector and dealer. Alfred Bader and his family have a reputation as generous benefactors, notably in the fields of chemistry, education and Jewish interests. In 1992, Bader gave #6 million to Queen's University, Ontario, to purchase and renovate Herstmonceux Castle in Sussex 288 pages. Illustrated with black and white photographs. Quantity Available: 1. The Pale Horseman, Bernard Cornwell
14 Bernard Cornwell The Pale Horseman
HarperCollins 245766 Australia 2005 0007210469 / 9780007210466 Trade Paperback Good Condition Continuing the outstanding success of The Last Kingdom, this is the second installment of Bernard Cornwell's fantastic series, following the fate of Alfred the Great ,and the forging of Britain. It is the lowest time for the Saxons. Defeated comprehensively by the Vikings who now occupy most of England, Alfred and his very small group of surviving followers retreat to the trackless marshlands of Somerset. There, forced to move restlessly to escape betrayal or detection, using the marsh mists for cover, they travel by small boats from one island refuge to another, hoping that they can regroup and find some more strength and support. Only Uhtred remains resolute. Determined to discover the enemy's strategies, he draws once again on his Viking upbringing, and attempts to enter the Viking camps. His plan is to become accepted by their leaders, and to sit in their councils and uncover their plans. But once there, the attractions of his many friends among the Vikings coupled with his disillusion with the Saxons' leadership and anger at Alfred's criticism of his own conduct, draws him back again to his allegiance to the Vikings. The Pale Horseman, an even more powerful and dramatic book than The Last Kingdom, brings both Uhtred and the Saxons' dilemmas vividly to life. 351 pages. Quantity Available: 1. Notes from a Small Island, Bill Bryson
15 Bill Bryson Notes from a Small Island
Black Swan 242902 Great Britain 1998 Reprint 0552996009 / 9780552996006 Softcover Good Condition After nearly two decades in Britain, Bill Bryson, the acclaimed author of such best-sellers as The Mother Tongue and Made in America, decided it was time to move back to the United States for a while. This was partly to let his wife and kids experience life in Bryson's homeland - and partly because he had read that 3.7 million Americans believed that they had been abducted by aliens at one time or another. It was thus clear to him that his people needed him. But before leaving his much-loved home in North Yorkshire, Bryson insisted on taking one last trip around Britain, a sort of valedictory tour of the green and kindly island that had so long been his home. His aim was to take stock of modern-day Britain, and to analyze what he loved so much about a country that had produced Marmite, zebra crossings, and place names like Farleigh Wallop, Titsey, and Shellow Bowells. With characteristic wit and irreverence, Bill Bryson presents the ludicrous and the endearing in equal measure. The result is a hilarious social commentary that conveys the true glory of Britain. 352 pages. Tanning to pages. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilogram. The Murdoch Archipelago, Bruce Page
18 Bruce Page The Murdoch Archipelago
Simon & Schuster 237821 Australia 2003 First Edition 0743239369 / 9780743239363 Hardcover Very Good Condition Very Good This biography shows how Murdoch's approach to the acquisition of influence has benefited from being diluted across three different political cultures - the US, Britain and Australia - even in the media-saturated, global-village culture he has been instrumental in creating. And because of the physical and cultural distances between the three Murdochs has been able to influence political affairs with impunity. Is this a good thing? The book argues convincingly that it is not, and indeed that it does against fundamental principles of democracy. Arguing that the freedom of the press is not just in our interest but a matter of life and death, it builds a case against the dangers of media monopoly. 580 pages. Pages browned.
