Chaucer - Canterbury Tales, A.C. Cawley [Editor]
2 A.C. Cawley [Editor] Chaucer - Canterbury Tales
Dent 237063 London 1984 Reprint 0460113070 / 9780460113076 Softcover Good Condition No Dust Jacket Inspired by Boccaccio's "Decameron", and framed as a storytelling competition between a group of pilgrims, Geoffrey Chaucer's "The Canterbury Tales" is one of the greatest works of English literature, translated from the Middle English with an introduction by Nevill Coghill in "Penguin Classics". In "The Canterbury Tales" Chaucer created one of the great touchstones of English literature, a masterly collection of chivalric romances, moral allegories and low farce. A story-telling competition between a group of pilgrims from all walks of life is the occasion for a series of tales that range from the Knight's account of courtly love and the ebullient Wife of Bath's Arthurian legend, to the ribald anecdotes of the Miller and the Cook. Rich and diverse, "The Canterbury Tales" offers us an unrivalled glimpse into the life and mind of Medieval England. Nevill Coghill's masterly and vivid English verse translation is rendered with consummate skill to retain all the vigour and poetry of Chaucer's fourteenth-century Middle English. Geoffrey Chaucer (c.1343-1400) was an English author, poet, philosopher, courtier and diplomat, best known as the author of "The Canterbury Tales". Chaucer is credited as being the first author to demonstrate the artistic legitimacy of the vernacular English language. The first poet to have been buried in the Poet's Corner of Westminster Abbey, his other works include "The House of Fame", "Troilus and Criseyde" and "The Book of the Duchess". If you enjoyed "The Canterbury Tales", you might like Boccaccio's "Decameron" 612 pages. Pages browned. Previous owners name on front endpaper. Cover edges rubbed. Quantity Available: 1. The Death of Literature, Alvin Kernan
8 Alvin Kernan The Death of Literature
Yale University Press 227800 USA 1990 0300052383 / 9780300052381 Softcover Very Good Condition Literature has passed through a crisis of confidence in recent decades-a radical questioning of its traditional values and its importance to humanity. In this witty and eloquent book, a distinguished professor of humanities looks at some of the agents that have contributed to literature's demise and ponders whether its vitality can be restored in the changing circumstances of late twentieth-century culture. Other critics, such as E. D. Hirsch and Allan Bloom, have also explored the growing cultural illiteracy of modern society. Alvin Kernan probes deeper, relating the death of literature to potent forces in our postindustrial world-most obviously, the technological revolution that is rapidly transforming a print to an electronic culture, replacing the authority of the written word with the authority of television, film, and computer screens. The turn taken by literary criticism itself, in deconstructing traditional literature and declaring it void of meaning in itself, and in focusing on what are described as its ideological biases against women and nonwhites, has speeded the disintegration. Recent legal debates about copyright, plagiarism, and political patronage of the arts have exposed the greed and self-interest at work under the old romantic images of the imaginative creative artist and the work of art as a perfect, unchanging icon. Kernan describes a number of the crossroads where literature and society have met and literature has failed to stand up. He discusses the high comedy of the obscenity trial in England against Lady Chatterley's Lover, in which the British literary establishment vainly tried to define literature. He takes alarmed looks at such agents of literary disintegration as schools where children who watch television eight hours a day can't read, decisions about who chooses and defines the words included in dictionaries, faculty fights about the establishment of new departments and categories of study, and courtrooms where criminals try to profit from bestselling books about their crimes. According to Kernan, traditional literature is ceasing to be legitimate or useful in these changed social surroundings. What is needed, he says, if it is any longer possible in electronic culture, is a conception of literature that fits in some positive way with the new ethos of post-industrialism, plausibly claiming a place of importance both to individual lives and to society as a whole for the best kind of writing. 230 pages. The Life and Opinions of Maf the Dog and of his Friend Marilyn Monroe, Andrew O'Hagan
9 Andrew O'Hagan The Life and Opinions of Maf the Dog and of his Friend Marilyn Monroe
Faber and Faber 244357 Great Britain 2010 0571215998 / 9780571215997 Trade Paperback Very Good Condition In November 1960, Frank Sinatra gave Marilyn Monroe a dog. His name was Maf. He had an instinct for the twentieth century. For politics. For psychoanalysis. For literature. For interior decoration. This is his story. Maf the dog was with Marilyn for the last two years of her life. Not only a picaresque hero himself, he was also a scholar of the adventuring rogue in literature and art, witnessing the rise of America's new liberalism, civil rights, the space race, the New York critics, and was Marilyn Monroe's constant companion. The story of Maf the dog is a hilarious and highly original peek into the life of a complex canine hero - he was very much a real historical figure, with his license and photographs sold at auction along with Marilyn's other person affects. Through the eyes of Maf we're provided with an insight into the life of Monroe herself, and a fascinating take on one of the most extraordinary periods of the twentieth century. 278 pages. The Politician: An Insider's Account of John Edward's Pursuit of the Presidency and the Scandal That Brought Him Down, Andrew Young
10 Andrew Young The Politician: An Insider's Account of John Edward's Pursuit of the Presidency and the Scandal That Brought Him Down
St. Martin's Press 238116 New York 2010 First Edition 031264065X / 9780312640651 Hardcover Very Good Condition Very Good "The greatest political saga, the one that has it all, that gets to the real heart of American politics, is the John Edwards story... This isn't just politics, it's literature. It's the great American novel, the kind that isn't written anymore." --Michael Wolff on John Edwards's trajectory, on "VanityFair.com"The underside of modern American politics -- raw ambition, manipulation, and deception -- are revealed in detail by Andrew Young's riveting account of a presidential hopeful's meteoric rise and scandalous fall. Like a non-fiction version of "All the King's Men," "The Politician" offers a truly disturbing, even shocking perspective on the risks taken and tactics employed by a man determined to rule the most powerful nation on earth. Idealistic and ambitious, Andrew Young volunteered for the John Edwards campaign for Senate in 1998 and quickly became the candidate's right hand man. As the senator became a national star, Young's responsibilities grew. For a decade he was this politician's confidant and he was assured he was 'like family." In time, however, Young was drawn into a series of questionable assignments that culminated with Edwards asking him to help conceal the Senator's ongoing adultery. Days before the 2008 presidential primaries began, Young gained international notoriety when he told the world that he was the father of a child being carried by a woman named Rielle Hunter, who was actually the senator's mistress. While Young began a life on the run, hiding from the press with his family and alleged mistress, John Edwards continued to pursue the presidency and then the Vice Presidency in the future Obama administration.Young had been the senator's closest aide and most trusted friend. He believed that John Edwards could be a great president, and was assured throughout the cover-up that his boss and friend would ultimately step forward to both tell the truth and protect his aide's career. Neither promise was kept. Not only a moving personal account of Andrew Young's political education, THE POLITICIAN offers a look at the trajectory which made John Edwards the ideal Democratic candidate for president, and the hubris which brought him down, leaving his career, his marriage and his dreams in ashes. 301 pages. The Last Chronicle of Barset, Anthony Trollope
16 Anthony Trollope The Last Chronicle of Barset
Wordsworth Classics 242615 1994 1853262315 / 9781853262319 Softcover Very Good Condition The central drama of the book is that of Mr.Crawley, the curate of Hogglestock who, falsely accused of theft, suffers bitterly with his family. This deceptively simple plot, though, is given a twist, and the character of Mr. Crawley is more ambigious than would at first appear. It is he himself who seems to bring about the most of his suffering, and the portrait of his man--gloomy brooding, and proud, moving relentlessly from one humiliation to another--achieves tragic dimensions. 712 pages.
