ABC Books 240624 Sydney 2013 0733331378 / 9780733331374 Hardcover Near Fine Condition Near Fine Fully updated with three new chapters, this is the illustrated edition of Gerard Whateley's bestselling story of the horse of a lifetime - Black Caviar. Fully updated, and including three new chapters, this sumptuous illustrated edition of Gerard Whateley's acclaimed bestseller, BLACK CAVIAR, documents in words and pictures, the career of the racehorse who has transcended the track to become an Australian icon. Under Moody's patient and masterful guidance, the hulking injury-prone filly matured into a champion, idolized by a devoted following more akin to a rock band than a racehorse. With her invincible run and marauding dominance, Black Caviar has returned racing to the glory days of more than half a century past and secured a reputation that will echo for as long as horses are sent out to race. this full-colour edition features more than 150 images celebrating Black Caviar's achievements. 438 pages. Seabiscuit: The True Story of Three Men and a Racehorse, Laura Hillenbrand
12 Laura Hillenbrand Seabiscuit: The True Story of Three Men and a Racehorse
Fourth Estate 245678 London 2001 0007167040 / 9780007167043 Softcover Good Condition The true story of three men and their dreams for a racehorse -- Seabiscuit -- that symbolised a pivotal moment in American history, as the twentieth century's greatest nation found the courage to bet on itself to win against the odds. Now a major motion picture directed by Gary Ross and starring Toby Maguire and Jeff Daniels. In 1936 the habits of 19th-century America were finally consigned to history just as Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind was published. In their place, modern America was born. But what defined this new era? Nothing more than the story of Seabiscuit, a stunted colt with asymmetrical knees that had for two years been hacked around no-good race tracks which led to permanent leg damage. Yet by 1937 Seabiscuit could draw crowds of 60,000 and had more newspaper column inches devoted to him than Mussolini, Hitler or Roosevelt, his popularity peaking during his appearances at the Santa Anita Handicap. America had gone to the races for the first time since the Depression and fallen in love with a misshapen colt of great character. Now it wanted a winner. Seabiscuit is aslo the story of three men: Tom Smith, a former Wild West Showman was the trainer; Red Pollard, abandoned by his poverty stricken family at a race track became the rider; and Charles Howard, a pioneer car manufacturer in San Francisco in the 1920s was the owner and financier. These three combined to create the legend of Seabiscuit and epitomise a dream for the emerging new America. 426 pages. Item Type: Film Tie-in. Tanning to pages. Black and white illustrations. In the 1950s and 1960s he gave exhibitions in Geneva, Brussels, Paris and London, followed by clinics in Saumur, Belgium, Holland, Italy, Australia and the USA. His pupils include the most talented dressage riders, officers of the Cadre Noir, and riders of the Portuguese School. Essential Care of the Ridden Horse, Peter Gray
20 Peter Gray Essential Care of the Ridden Horse
David & Charles 225218 London 2002 First Edition 0715311581 / 9780715311585 Hardcover Very Good Condition Very Good He sets out to extend and reinforce that knowledge with this thorough yet easy-to-read guide to caring for the ridden horse. Whether the owner enjoys gentle hacks through the countryside or the thrill of competition, understanding how to keep the horse at peak fitness is all part of the relationship. Peter Gray pays particular attention to to those common conditions that call a temporary halt to riding activity - lameness, respiratory infections, muscular strains - but that are very often caused by incorrect management and are therefore avoidable. He also unravels the important factors that influence performance in horses facing active competition; the practical, sensible everyday things that can mean the difference between losing and winning. This is a book of good sense, practical advice and thorough expert knowledge for all owners who want the best for their horses. 160 pages. Illustrated with colour and black and white photographs.
